Artist statement The aim in my paintings is to let the painting form itself, my role is to reveal the image through the actions and quality of the paint. They are built up of many layers, each reacting to what happened in the last (sometimes this means painting out entirely), until I feel like the painting has come across its final image. The subject is influenced by the landscapes that I see and the sense of place they give me, colors I am drawn to and compositions I have spied. To me there are paintings everywhere, the texture in a paving stone, the colors mixing when I pour cream into my coffee, the grain in wood, while I see electricity cables as drawings in air. This is what I would like my paintings to encapture, these chance intersections of color, line, composition and texture. I am trying to hold an essence or feeling of a place or moment that is uncontrived and vital. The paintings need to stay alive, maintaining the sense of motion and the feeling of potential that is present in the first few brush strokes. And by not spelling everything out I hope that there is an opportunity for the viewer (which includes myself) to resolve the painting in their own way enabling them to become personally involved in the painting. |
